PLAN
Since 1967, the town of Dungloe has come alive every summer as it welcomes thousands of visitors for the Mary from Dungloe International Arts Festival, one of Ireland’s most iconic and enduring cultural celebrations. Now in its 58th year, the festival has grown from humble beginnings into a dynamic 10-day extravaganza, running from 27th July to 5th August, that seamlessly blends cherished traditions with exciting modern events.
The festival offers something for everyone, making it a must-attend for adults, families, and young people alike. From parades and live music to art exhibitions and street performances, the program is packed with activities that showcase local talent while also featuring renowned Irish and international acts. Visitors can expect a vibrant mix of cultural showcases, family-friendly fun, and lively nighttime entertainment.
At the heart of the festival is the much-anticipated Mary from Dungloe competition, a tribute to the community’s spirit and heritage. This event sees young women from around the globe—each with ties to Dungloe or a love for its culture—competing for the prestigious title of ‘Mary.’ The winner, chosen in a spectacular ceremony on the festival’s final Sunday, becomes an ambassador for the region, embodying the warmth, resilience, and charm of Donegal.
Beyond the entertainment, the festival holds deep sentimental value. For many, it serves as a homecoming, a time to reconnect with family, friends, and the breathtaking landscapes of Donegal. Generations of emigrants have returned to walk the streets of Dungloe, share stories, and relive cherished memories, making the festival a powerful symbol of community and belonging.
Whether it’s your first time visiting or a long-awaited return, the Mary from Dungloe International Arts Festival promises a unique celebration of music, art, and heritage, where the past and present intertwine in unforgettable ways.
